Overview
Proper file preparation is crucial for achieving professional print quality. This guide covers all technical requirements for book printing at Rainbow Book Printing.
Files that do not meet these specifications may be rejected or require revision, which can delay your production schedule. Please review carefully before submission.
Document Size & Bleed
Understanding Bleed
Bleed is the area beyond your final trim size where images and backgrounds should extend. This ensures no white edges appear after trimming.
Add 0.125 inches (3mm) bleed to all sides of your document. For a 6" x 9" book, your document size should be 6.25" x 9.25".
Size Limitations
| Dimension | Maximum Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 18.5 inches | Due to paper sheet constraints |
| Height | 26.4 inches | Due to paper sheet constraints |
| Bleed | 0.125 inches (all sides) | Required for all documents |
Safe Zone
Keep all critical text and elements at least 0.25 inches (6mm) away from the trim edge to prevent accidental trimming.
Color Mode & Profiles
CMYK vs RGB
All files must be converted to CMYK color mode before submission. RGB colors will appear different when printed.
Converting from RGB to CMYK can cause color shifts, especially in bright blues, greens, and oranges. Always convert and review colors before finalizing your design.
Recommended Color Profiles
- US/Americas: SWOP (Coated) or GRACoL
- Europe: ISO Coated v2 (ECI)
- Asia: Japan Color 2001 Coated
Black & White Printing
For B/W interior pages, use Grayscale mode or 100% Black (K) only. Avoid rich blacks with CMYK combinations for text.
Image Resolution
Minimum Requirements
| Content Type | Minimum DPI | Recommended DPI |
|---|---|---|
| Color Photos | 300 DPI | 350 DPI |
| Grayscale Images | 300 DPI | 350 DPI |
| Line Art / Graphics | 600 DPI | 1200 DPI |
| Text | 1200 DPI | 1200 DPI |
Resolution must be measured at final print size, not original image size. A 150 DPI image scaled to 50% will print at 300 DPI.
Fonts & Text
Font Embedding
All fonts must be embedded in your PDF. Missing fonts will cause text to reflow or display incorrectly.
Font Requirements
- Use TrueType (.ttf) or OpenType (.otf) fonts
- Embed all fonts with full character sets
- Avoid bitmap or screen fonts
- Check font licensing for commercial printing
Minimum Font Sizes
| Font Type | Minimum Size | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Body Text | 8 pt | 10-12 pt |
| Footnotes | 6 pt | 8 pt |
| Reversed Text (white on dark) | 10 pt | 12 pt |
